Hybrid Transportation
GE’s interest in batteries and electric vehicles dates back to our founder Thomas Edison, and early GE research pioneers like Charles Steinmetz. Although not feasible during Edison’s and Steinmetz’s time, steady improvements in hybrid and battery technologies have now given us a clear line of sight that viable hybrid and electric vehicles are just around the corner.
Scientists and engineers in GE Global Research’s Advanced Batteries and Hybrid Systems labs are hard at work to deliver advanced hybrid system and battery technologies that will make the electrification of transportation economically viable. They are exploring a novel dual-battery energy storage system that combines two different battery chemistries into one system, to more cost-effectively deliver the optimal power and electric range needed to make this work.
